Ingredients

In this video, Italian chef Fabio enjoys Saizeriya from the perspectives of both authentic Italian food culture and Japan's unique Yoshoku (Western-style) food culture. Ordering a full course from aperitivo (pre-dinner drinks and appetizers) to antipasto, pasta, mains, doria, and dolce, he explains the background and ways to enjoy each dish. He also shares unique hacks, such as ordering half-portions of pasta and using hot sauce, packing the video with knowledge to help you enjoy Saizeriya on a deeper level. The final bill for one person was 7,740 yen (tax included).

  • Choosing Drinks
    • Choose the sparkling wine 'Don Raffaello (1,000 yen)' as your first bubbles. It features green apple and citrus aromas with light bubbles, making it easy to pair with any dish at Saizeriya.
  • Enjoying Aperitivo
    • Following Italian culture, you can enjoy an aperitivo style at Saizeriya by pairing sparkling wine with fried foods (Popcorn Shrimp, Spicy Chicken) or Arrosticini before the main meal.
  • Eating Spicy Chicken
    • Since chicken wings have two bones, use a fork to remove the smaller bone first. Pull the remaining meat down slightly to form a tulip shape to enjoy the flavor directly in one bite.
  • Using Olive Oil
    • Drizzle plenty of Saizeriya's olive oil over the Baby Shrimp Cocktail. The ocean aroma of the seaweed and the fruitiness of the oil harmonize beautifully.
  • Pasta Hack
    • Ordering 'half-portion of noodles' increases the ratio of toppings and sauce, allowing the sauce to coat each strand perfectly for a much richer flavor (may not be available at all locations/times).
  • Pasta Customization
    • Adding a few drops of the free hot sauce to the Baby Shrimp Tarako Pasta instantly transforms it into a spicy Mentaiko-style pasta.
  • Wine Pairing
    • The white wine 'Verdicchio (1,000 yen)' from Marche pairs perfectly with seafood. It makes an outstanding pairing with the clam broth of the Bongolet pasta.
  • Main Dish Hack
    • Topping the Hamburger Steak with Prosciutto (291 yen) and cutting them together creates a deep, layered flavor of savory meat and saltiness, inspired by Northern Italian Bolognese style.
  • Enjoying Dolce
    • Pairing the Tiramisu Classico with an espresso from the drink bar brings the flavor much closer to the authentic Italian taste.
  • Dining Philosophy
    • Instead of comparing casual and high-end restaurants by the same standards, it's important to see if the food, service, and atmosphere consistently match the restaurant's concept.

Italian Food Culture at Saizeriya! A Bubbly Lunch

Hi, I'm Fabio, an Italian chef. Today, I'm having lunch at Saizeriya. I want to enjoy the meal from various perspectives: authentic Italian views, dishes that are delicious precisely because they are from Saizeriya, and Japan's unique take on Italian food. We start with 'Aperitivo,' the Italian culture of enjoying light drinks and appetizers before dinner. For our first bubbles, I ordered the sparkling wine 'Don Raffaello (1,000 yen)' along with 'Popcorn Shrimp,' 'Spicy Chicken,' and 'Arrosticini.' Don Raffaello is made at a winery in Asti, Piedmont, Northern Italy. It features green apple and citrus aromas with light bubbles. Since it doesn't overpower the food, it pairs well with almost any dish at Saizeriya. Getting a whole bottle for 1,000 yen in this day and age is unbelievably cheap.

Fried Food & Bubbles: Popcorn Shrimp & Chicken

The food arrived right after ordering. The speed of service is amazing. Let's start with the 'Popcorn Shrimp (273 yen).' Fried food is the absolute best pairing for sparkling wine. Dipping the crispy fried shrimp into the rich aurora sauce makes the wine go down so easily. Italians would absolutely love this flavor. Next is Saizeriya's classic 'Spicy Chicken (273 yen).' Let me show you a chef's trick for eating this cleanly. Since chicken wings have two bones, use a fork to remove the smaller bone first. Then, pull the remaining meat down slightly to form a tulip shape, allowing you to eat all the meat in one bite. This lets you enjoy the savory flavor of the meat directly. The mild spiciness of the chicken pairs beautifully with the crisp bubbles of Don Raffaello.

Authentic Taste! Lamb Skewers 'Arrosticini'

Next is the 'Arrosticini (364 yen).' This isn't just casual Italian-style food; it is completely authentic Italian cuisine. It's a street food from the Abruzzo region in central Italy, essentially lamb skewers. I've been visiting Abruzzo for the past few years, and I was shocked by how similar this tastes to what you get over there. They use high-quality Australian lamb, which has no gamey odor and tastes incredible. In Italy, it's eaten simply with salt, but Saizeriya serves it with a special spice mix tailored to Japanese tastes. Locally, you'd pair it with a red wine like Montepulciano d'Abruzzo or a white like Pecorino, but it also pairs outstandingly with this Don Raffaello. Being able to eat two skewers for under 400 yen (tax included) is a testament to incredible corporate effort.

Sommelier Approved! Shrimp & Olive Oil

For the antipasto, I ordered the 'Baby Shrimp Cocktail (255 yen).' This dish replaces the lettuce in Saizeriya's popular 'Baby Shrimp Salad' with seaweed. Seaweed and olive oil actually pair wonderfully. Saizeriya's olive oil has an excellent reputation, so I'm drizzling a generous amount over it. Taking a bite, I was amazed by how plump and fresh the shrimp is, with absolutely no fishy smell. The portion size for this price is incredible. I actually hold an olive oil sommelier certification, and while many oils distributed in Japan are of poor quality, Saizeriya's olive oil is genuinely delicious. Importing from Italy usually makes it expensive due to tariffs and shipping, so offering it at this low price is mind-blowing. The ocean aroma of the seaweed and the fruitiness of the oil harmonize perfectly.

Chef's Hack: Half-Portion Pasta for Rich Flavor

To go with the pasta, I ordered the white wine 'Verdicchio (1,000 yen).' This wine from the Marche region pairs beautifully with seafood. Saizeriya originally started as a Western-style restaurant in Ichikawa, Chiba, so their Japanese-style pastas make perfect sense. This time, I ordered the 'Salt-Based Clam Soup Pasta (455 yen)' and 'Baby Shrimp Tarako Pasta (491 yen)' with the toppings kept as they are but with 'half-portions of noodles.' This is my personal hack: by reducing the noodles, the ratio of sauce and toppings increases, allowing the sauce to coat every single strand of pasta, making it incredibly delicious. The clam pasta contains 13 clams, and the garlic-infused broth pairs perfectly with the Verdicchio. For the tarako pasta, adding a few drops of the free hot sauce transforms it into a spicy 'Mentaiko pasta.' With the savory shrimp flavor added, this has become my number one pasta at Saizeriya.

100% Beef Hamburger Steak: Chef Approved

For the main, I got the 'Hamburger Steak (364 yen).' Saizeriya's hamburger steak is made with 100% Australian beef, offering a robust meaty flavor. The demi-glace sauce is well-balanced and not too heavy. I used to work part-time at 'Tsubame Grill' during high school, so I'm quite picky about hamburger steaks, but Saizeriya's is truly delicious. For a luxurious twist, I ordered a side of 'Prosciutto (291 yen)' to place on top of the hamburger steak, cutting and eating them together. This creates a deep, layered flavor of savory meat and saltiness, reminiscent of Northern Italian Bolognese style. In Italy, 'hamburger' usually refers to just the patty, and the Japanese-style hamburger steak is a unique local culture, but the fact that you can get this quality at this price is astonishing.

Milano-Style Doria & Authentic Dolce

To finish, we have the 'Milano-Style Doria (273 yen).' Doria doesn't actually exist in Milan, Italy; it's a unique Japanese Western-style dish born at a hotel in Yokohama. Being able to enjoy the fragrant turmeric rice and the rich combination of meat sauce and white béchamel sauce piping hot for under 300 yen (tax included) is something to be truly grateful for. Finally, we end with dolce. I ordered the 'Coffee Jelly & Milk Gelato (319 yen)' and 'Tiramisu Classico (273 yen).' The coffee jelly is lightly sweetened and refreshing, contrasting beautifully with the rich milk gelato. Tiramisu is a memorable dessert for me, as I first learned how to make it from an Italian mamma when I visited Italy at age 16. Saizeriya's version has a rich mascarpone flavor, and I highly recommend pairing it with an espresso from the drink bar to bring it closer to the authentic taste. It's also wonderful how fresh it tastes.

The Total Bill & Fabio's Dining Philosophy

After eating and drinking all of this, the total bill came to just 7,740 yen (tax included). Enjoying a full-course meal by myself for this price is incredibly cheap. Lastly, let me share my philosophy on dining out. I never say negative things about restaurants. This doesn't mean I praise everything blindly, but rather that comparing casual diners to high-end restaurants is nonsensical. What matters is whether the food, service, and atmosphere consistently match the restaurant's concept. I realized once again that Saizeriya has maintained this consistency perfectly, which is why it has been loved in Japan for so long. It is truly a wonderful casual Italian restaurant. Thank you for the meal!
